“Smart City” designers should adopt the “Serenity Prayer;”

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I
Cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
and Wisdom to know the difference.”

By Reinhold Niebuhr – 1934

Impassiveness means starting to practice Stoicism. A beginning for the urban design of things emerges with equanimity and calmness. The proposed interdisciplinary design process must control the emerging of imagination from many participants in citizen/leadership.

Future urban design concepts introduced are linked to four entities. “Genius Clusters” and “Calm Rooms” are placed in all eco/geographic areas for “Smart Cities.” Served by “Geoscopes” and “Stakeholder R&D Laboratories.” Transmission of collective valued thoughts and expertise shared for transparent, collaborative commons it is forwarded in city decision-making. The principal challenge is to integrate these collective experiences for practical outcomes that better humankind quality of life in the towns to create harmony with Nature.

Shifting urban conceptual goals from status quo external conditions to
Internally created own awareness is the beginning of a future urban decision-making transformation. Appropriate conversation and debate between citizen/leadership possibilities for the future of “Smart Cities” should predominate interactive design activities. Mental preparedness to accept whatever actual consensus outcome results with equanimity is a prerequisite community discipline. Knowing that sometimes the universe of public decision-making will favor the particular project in mind, while other times it will not, is the circumstantial reality.

The citizen audience is now engaged positively with leadership at the outset. All decision-making actions are free of tyranny. Citizens are no longer participating in a spectator sport. All public decision makers have rights and obligations.

A design does not mean passive acceptance of whatever happens, but it is the mark of wise citizen/leadership efforts to realize that things don’t always go the way desired. If it doesn’t, pick up the pieces, and move on.

Forging the best urban design decision-making is a microcosm of contributions found in each participant “Smart City” control to define. Choosing to engage the local values of urban growth and change must consider many factors involved with the urban design organization, management, and operation of city development. Hearings and streamed visualizations of reality conditions represent aggregate information sourced from the distributed “Goescopes” to “Genius Clusters,” “Calm Rooms,” and “Stakeholders R&D Laboratories.”

Citizen leadership reaching Concord without fear of reprisal as the goal for all is to become Patriots of Peace, Prosperity, and Liberty. Resulting behavior controls avarice, vanity, cruelty, treason, fraud, division, fury, and fear of death.

Never blame or criticize participants for reasonable rationality frugality and legitimate use of resources but rather evaluate solutions in the framework of the citizen/leadership and the resulting negotiated agreements. All are involved in city design. One cannot be upset with the end results. Adopting an attitude of composure toward life’s ups and downs in aggregate leads to a more serene life.
